Hermosa Creek Wilderness Study Area Adventures

Located within the San Juan National Forest near Durango, Colorado, Hermosa Creek Wilderness Study Area encompasses roughly 37,500 acres of diverse high-country terrain including dense spruce-fir forests, alpine meadows, and crystal-clear streams. The area follows Hermosa Creek, a tributary of the Animas River, whose watershed is noted for its excellent water quality and aquatic habitats. Elevations range from approximately 7,800 feet at Hermosa Creek Trailhead up to nearly 13,000 feet along the ridge lines, including several peaks exceeding 12,000 feet. Historically, the Hermosa Creek watershed was protected by Congress through the Hermosa Creek Watershed Protection Act in 2014, which designated parts of the area as Wilderness and set the rest aside as a Wilderness Study Area, focusing on conservation and recreation balance. Recreation within Hermosa Creek WSA centers on hiking and backpacking through several long trails offering access to alpine basins and scenic valleys.
